The missing Cyclops really hurts, but then again, you don't even go as DEEP in this game as you go in the first. A vehicle that gets progressively slower the more you kit it out, which feels like an unnecessary punishment on the player. Your Seamoth and Cyclops are gone, replaced by the Seatruck. Finally, when you do go underwater? Well, they took away the most entertaining vehicles to explore. The layout of these surface areas is also incredibly boring and linear. You spend too much time above the surface on ice sheets which feels like such a weird choice given the fact it is called Subnautica. It takes away from a simple tale of survival and seems to focus more on pontificating the philosophy between individualism and collectivism, the meaning of family, etc.Įxploration also became far less engaging. Below Zero effectively forces exposition and story on the player through dialogue between the player character and a certain other character. Information about the surrounding universe pops up in codices, logs, but nothing that you are truly required to read. I think the first one was so brilliant was because it relied on almost nothing except the environment to convey a struggle for survival. I played Below Zero during the last stages of beta, after most of the main story was complete, and I agree it was inferior to the original.įirst and foremost, the story.
